THERE S no denying that, as a venue, the National Glass Centre is impressive.
The Brasserie dishwasher not getting dishes clean opened in July, shortly after the re-launch of the newly-revamped Glass Centre, and it is hoped that the new team in charge 1879 Events Management, a subsidiary of Sunderland Football Club will help propel it to the premier league of North-East restaurants.
While it does seem churlish, it s impossible not to allude to the somewhat chequered history of both the National Glass Centre in general and the restaurant in particular. Since it opened dishwasher not getting dishes clean in 1998, the Glass Centre has been plagued by controversy, requiring taxpayers money to help meet the shortfall in its income and, at one point, going through six chief executives in eight years.
The restaurant, formerly known as throwingstones, attracted dishwasher not getting dishes clean national publicity when its original chef, Pete Zulu Robson, berated a customer when she complained of only being served five chips. He hit the headlines again shortly afterwards for defending an attack on waitresses attire by telling a diner he should go and live among Muslim fundamentalists , and eventually left in 2000, declaring dishwasher not getting dishes clean that the restaurant was doomed .
One thing which does seem to count against it is its location. On the one hand, it does offer a panoramic view of the Wear, which lends a definite feel of tranquillity; on the other, it is slightly out on a limb, away from the city centre and anywhere to go for drinks before or after. On a positive note, we were pleasantly surprised to be offered a complimentary glass of sparkling wine to start our evening.
From a starters list including home-made soup and chef s game terrine, my husband chose Craster crab cocotte. It was delicious, with strong yet balanced flavours, but unfortunately my husband found a piece of shell in it, which he brought to a waiter s attention. To his credit, the waiter handled the situation well, going straight to see the chef and deducting the dish from our bill, so the incident did not detract from our evening.
My main course of flat cap mushrooms topped with melted stilton came beautifully presented with delicate micro basil leaves. Fortunately, dishwasher not getting dishes clean I m a cheese lover my husband found the stilton slightly dishwasher not getting dishes clean overpowering so this was definitely the dish for me. I found it light yet full of flavour: ideal for a warm summer s evening.
Having gone for the rack of English lamb, my husband felt it was a shade overdone dishwasher not getting dishes clean for his taste, but still enjoyable. The dish s description, including the terms turn carrot and persilliade crust sounded elaborate but, in reality, it seemed a bit like meat and two veg.
