FROM: Ike Matshego I am a native of Rustenburg and the issue of Platinum Stars inability to attract supporters on an even reasonable scale, despite the team s recent brilliant performances, has been a concern for me for quite some time.
However, I am very sceptical about Platinum Stars ability to attract a lot of support, despite the Royal Bafokeng compact dish rack Stadium being right in the middle compact dish rack of Phokeng and most settlements in the Rustenburg area being at most just half an hour s drive from the venue.
My reasons are as follows: The Platinum Stars management position the team as a North West club . This should stop! Rustenburg is primarily a mining town and has over the years attracted migrant labourers. Many of these non-permanent residents of the town do not identify with it and even the North West Province. Their loyalty remains with their traditional teams and giving the team a geographical identity will not work. I remember bumping into a guy wearing a Bloemfontein Celtic jersey a few years ago, and when I protested that he was now in the territory of Platinum Stars, he made it clear that he was in Rustenburg just to work and his roots remained firmly in Bloemfontein.
My main reason though is that the Rustenburg originals , people who were born and/or bred in the Rustenburg compact dish rack area are traditionally Orlando Pirates or Kaizer Chiefs, supporters and it will take a generation to persuade them to be fully behind their local team. Most of them regard Platinum Stars as their second team , supporting it when it plays with a team other than the one they support, more so if the other team is your traditional Soweto foes
The final reason is that Platinum Stars was created out of an acquired franchise (i.e. Silver Stars) and Rustenburg-based players have not made it into the first team. Bloemfontein Celtics compact dish rack and Mamelodi Sundowns were formed by local players all those years ago, hence they still enjoy solid support in their home bases. I drove around Phokeng using my own petrol just to be told by people that they did not know the team. I nevertheless gave away about 40 tickets or so.
